Waggle Technology
Waggle is an open source platform for edge computing and intelligent, wireless sensors. It's what's used to develop the hardware and software of the nodes that make up the AoT.
It's revolutionizing how we do sensing in the environment.
Waggle was developed at Argonne National Laboratory by Pete Beckman, Charlie Catlett, Rajesh Sankaran, Nicola Ferrier, and dozens of student interns over multiple summers.
A new generation of Waggle nodes with upgraded sensors and more powerful computing is underway as part of the SAGE project LINK. The new NSF-funded project is led by Northwestern University in partnership with the University of Chicago, Argonne National Laboratory, the University of Colorado, the University of California-San Diego, Northern Illinois University, Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo, the University of Utah, and George Mason University.
In addition to AoT and other urban research initiatives, Waggle software and hardware supports environmental and atmospheric science in a variety of environments, from the Chicago Botanic Garden to the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Research Facility in Oklahoma.
