The AoT nodes are at the physcial fitness trackers of this project. Strategically placed roughly 22-24 feet above the street on lampposts and buildings all over the city, the nodes measure 18 variables using a number of sensors.
AoT is based on the open platform Waggle technology developed at Argonne National Laboratory. Waggle and the majority of the custom aspects of the node have been developed and manufactured in Chicagoland.
The data collected by the nodes are made available at no cost to the public. The collection of this data allows for many different and valuable uses.
With the help of the City of Chicago government and citizens, AoT has developed detailed policies on the use of the data and privacy protection.
We're excited to announce that as of October 2019, AoT became an anchor partner in a new National Science Foundation-funded project called SAGE: A Software-Defined Sensor Network. SAGE will create a new generation of Waggle nodes with upgraded sensors and more powerful computing for AI "at the edge."
